The Challenges to the Common Good
The Common Good: A framework for transforming conflict and violence
The pursuit of the common good is about building a society in which everyone can live, flourish and prosper together. However, in societies emerging from conflict there are several big challenges facing the pursuit of the common good including how the past is remembered and the way in which violence often becomes normalised. To transform conflict and build a society based on the common good requires civic participation and playing an active role in shaping society for the good of all.
This video forms part of the Remembering the Past, Shaping the Future Youth Link resource aimed at promoting peace building in Northern Ireland and across the island of Ireland. The project is funded by the Community Relations Council NI and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Paper:
One of the biggest challenges surrounding the building of a society based on the common good in Northern Ireland / the North of Ireland is the way in which the past is commemorated. This paper explores the relationship between collective memory and intergroup conflict and introduces principles for how we can remember the past in a way that promotes reconciliation and supports the common good.
