OCN NI Training for Youth Work

Level 1:  Leadership in Youth Work Programme

The Leadership in Youth Work Programme is designed for young people (*15-17 year olds) who have:

  

  • been involved in a youth group;
  • leadership aspirations and potential;
  • been recommended by the leader-in-charge who is prepared to provide supervision for the candidate throughout the duration of the programme.

The programme enables young people to share experiences and gain essential knowledge and skills for initial leadership.  It is delivered over approximately 8 sessions and includes some individual work as well as a concurrent period of supervised practice, in a trainee leadership role, within a youth group. 

The programme is accredited at Level 1 by Open College Network, Northern Ireland and consists of 3 Units: 

 

Unit 1 – Leadership in Youth Work 

This Unit will look at the qualities and skills that leaders use in a youth work setting.  It will also focus on the different styles of leadership and the roles and responsibilities of a youth leader. 

 

Unit 2 – Communication in Youth Work 

Good communication is the key to all effective youth work.  This Unit will look at the skills needed to communicate with young people. 

 

Unit 3 – Planning and Delivering Youth Work Activities 

This Unit will look at planning, delivering and evaluating a youth work activity in a team context, setting targets and priorities to make the activity a success. 

 

*While candidates can register for the programme at 15, they must be 16 by the time they complete the course. 

 

Course duration: 30 hours in total: 20 taught; 10 work practice

Kairos Project - "A Journey in Understanding and Building Community"

A Peer Education Programme

(15-17 year olds)

 

Kairos is a Greek word for ‘time' - God's time. It refers to a particular moment of opportunity which must be seized.  The beginning of the 21st Century is such a moment, with

new challenges and opportunities to enable young people and those who journey with them to be creative peace makers and builders of the future. Kairos Project is designed

to promote active citizenship among young people by:

  • enabling young people to reflect on and consider the issues of identity, culture, faith, politics and history in Northern Ireland;
  • encouraging young people to listen to and share with other young people from backgrounds and experiences other than their own;
  • developing trusting relationships and facilitating young people's participation in residentials, social activities and workshops;
  • acquiring the skills to be creative peace makers and builders of a new future;
  • working together on a project which impacts positively on community relationships.

Education for Peace

includes OCN NI Level 1 Good Relations & Cultural Diversity

(15*-17 year olds) 

 

This programme is designed for young adults from different traditions and cultural backgrounds and looks at issues of identity, diversity, conflict, local and global citizenship and democracy. 

 

The programme will include: 

 

  • residentials, social activities, debates, workshops;
  • visits to interface areas;
  • visits to Democratic Institutions eg Stormont, Dail, Westminster,
  • meetings with political, civic and religious leaders;
  • applying the principles of equity, diversity and interdependence;
  • contributing to reconciliation, peace and the building of a better future for all.

This is a personal development programme aimed at young people and delivered within 15-20 hours.

Peace Building and Reconciliation Training

OCN NI Level 2 'Handling Life's Conflicts'

(Conflict Management/Transformation Programme)

(16-25 year olds)

 

This programme is designed:

  • to build capacity within local communities to develop a culture of non-violence;
  • to enable young adults discover and explore alternative ways of dealing with relationships, difference and conflict; and
  • to contribute to peace and reconciliation activities within areas of sectarian conflict.

Content includes:

  • the nature and role of conflict;
  • managing and transforming conflict;
  • finding renewal in conflict;
  • personal styles in conflict;
  • skills for handling conflict;
  • peer mediation skills.

Duration:

 

30 hours including one residential and four single days.
